School Introduction

The University of Idaho is located in Moscow, Idaho - the gateway to a natural wonderland. Nestled on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains, UI is the state's major research and graduate institution. Our residential campus is home to 10 colleges and over 60 departments serving more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, including nearly 500 international students from over 85 countries. The University of Idaho also offers NCAA Division I-A athletics, an 18-hole golf course, the world-class Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and much more. Ranked nationally as one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America, Moscow is a safe and friendly community of about 20,000 residents. In addition to the small town setting, its population also enjoys many of the amenities of a much larger community. Coffee shops, art galleries, theaters, clubs, bookstores and bike paths abound. Nearby, you will also find some of the best (and least crowded) sites for skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and mountain biking in the region. Moscow is only eight miles east of Pullman, Washington - home of Washington State University, and the resort community of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and the city of Spokane, Washington are just 87 miles away. Those who study here enjoy the safety and comfort of a rural area, a legion of natural wonders, rich cultural diversity, and a unique academic center.

ESL Program Introduction

The American Language and Culture Program is the University of Idaho's intensive English program designed to prepare students for success in university academic (graduate and undergraduate) programs. The ALCP is divided into six levels, from beginner to advanced. Completion of ALCP Level 5 fulfills the University of Idaho's English Language Proficiency requirement (525 score on the TOEFL). ALCP Level 6 is designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for the advanced course work required of graduate students. Our record of preparing students for success is remarkable, due in large part to our dedicated and accomplished teachers and our progressive staff. ALCP is a small program in a safe, friendly and scenic community. This allows us to offer small classes, with low student to teacher ratios. We provide students many opportunities to become involved in the community, meet U.S. people, practice your English skills, and transition easily into other programs at the University. ALCP students find the University of Idaho, and community of Moscow, a comfortable and interesting environment in which to study English.
