Founded in 1857, SJSU is not only the oldest state university in California, but one of the top regional public universities in the western U.S. Located on 154 acres in downtown San José, the SJSU Main Campus features more than 50 major buildings (23 academic buildings, 7 residence halls) on 19 city blocks in downtown San Jose. Approximately 30,000 SJSU students choose from more than 134 bachelor's and master's degree programs. SJSU is famous for its nationally recognized Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Art, and Graduate Occupational Therapy departments. A variety of undergraduate and graduate College of Business programs also attract international professionals to Silicon Valley. ESL Program Introduction Since 1975, Studies in American Language (SAL) has continuously offered high-quality English language instruction that meets the professional, academic, and practical needs of its students. Classes are designed for those students planning to attend an American college or university and for others who wish to improve their English communication skills for professional or personal reasons. In addition to a challenging academic curriculum, SAL also provides students with direct exposure to the American culture through field trips and activities. Full-time faculty hold Master's degrees related to teaching English to speakers of other languages. All teachers have years of experience in creating academic and communicative courses. Special programs include Academic English, Business English, Online courses, and MBA-One Preparation (MBA-One is a 1 year MBA program offered by SJSU.
