School Introduction

AIUS is affiliated with the Curtin University of Technology as an institution providing tertiary opportunities for both Australian and International students. Established in 1987, AIUS is located in Joondalup, a 20-minute ride away by the electric rail link service from Perth, Australia. Situated on 13.8 hectares of landscaped parkland, AIUS is a modern purpose built campus, supported by the latest resources providing personalised learning. Joondalup City is fast becoming one of Western Australia’s latest success stories and is well on the way to being Perth’s second major Central Business District. A well-planned city, Joondalup boasts a myriad of lifestyle features including large shopping malls, cinemas, golf courses, holiday resort, restaurants, a health campus and the $35 million Joondalup Sporting Arena. Lake Joondalup provides the backdrop to the city and is also host to a number of recreational and water sporting activities due to the mediterranean climate. Monthly maximum temperatures range from 17ºC in July to 35ºC in February. The sun shines on a yearly average of 8 hours per day. Perth is in close proximity to major Asian centres with flying time from Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur under 5 hours and 7.5 hours from Hong Kong. Perth is also the closest Australian capital city to Africa and has frequent and affordable flights linking the two continents.

ESL Program Introduction

The English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) offered at AIUS include both General English and English for Academic Purposes. The dual
pathway provides excellent opportunities for entry into the English speaking workplace and community or university. Both General and Academic units are taught by experienced and highly qualified ELICOS staff members. The courses are all accredited by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme. The ELICOS classes cover all essential language macro-skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students also study from a recommended course book. Applied Grammar Workshops, Computing and Group Activities/Excursions form part of the curriculum. Students are tested for placement at the beginning of their ELICOS course and are then placed in the appropriate level. Students work up through the levels until they reach the required level for graduation or entry into a Pre-University or University Course. ELICOS courses are run over four 9- week terms and an 8-week Summer Semester. The duration of study will depend on the level the student is at.

Tuition Fee: $USD 210 per week.
